The Cooper MkV Manx Norton 500cc

Chassis # MkV/4/51

 

1951-1954.

Built in 1951, fourth one built of 53, and was Earl's Court Show Car.

Imported to Australia, less bodywork, by John Crouch, the Australian dealer for Coopers.

Bodywork by Stan "Noose" Smith.

Purchased by Bill Shipway, and first raced at Parramatta Park.  Also raced at Mt Druit, HMAS Albatros (Nowra), Bathurst (1954) & Hillclimbs, Gnoo Blas (Orange).

 

1954-1959.

Owner John Kennedy, driven by Bill Board and raced at Bathurst Hillclimb.

 

1959-1960.

Owner Heath Koaghan.

 

1960-1964.

Owner Barry Blake.  Well known motoring journalist's first race car.  Raced at Oran Park, Katoomba and entered Bathurst but didn't race.

 

1964-1966.

Owner Alan Watson.  Manx engine removed, and installed the Inter-Norton engine.  Manx engine put into sidecar.

Last race meeting for the car was in 1966 at Oran Park.

 

1966-1988.

Owner Ron Ewing raced the car in historic events.

 

1988-1996.

Owner Ashley Cowan raced the car in historic events at Oran Park, Eastern Creek, Wakefield Park, Mallala and Collinsgrove Hillclimb.

 

1996-Today.

Owner Andrew Halliday.  Raced it for a while with the Inter-Norton engine, before reinstalling a Manx Norton and bringing it back to original specifications.

Participated in various historic meetings at Eastern Creek, Wakefield Park, Oran Park (long & short), & Speed On The Tweed 2006.

Holds lap records for 500cc cars at Oran Park short, and is the only 500cc race car ever raced on the GP Circuit.
